Most National Railcards don't actually save you money on an Oyster pay-as-you-go journey to or from Heathrow on the Elizabeth line, because TfL charges all Tube and Elizabeth line journeys touching Zone 1 at the peak rate around the clock, and most Railcards only discount off-peak PAYG fares. The exception is the Disabled Persons Railcard, which gives a genuine third off both peak and off-peak PAYG fares, so it does reduce the cost on Heathrow journeys when loaded onto an Oyster card. Other Railcard holders can still get their discount, just not through Oyster PAYG: buying a paper ticket instead applies the Railcard reduction to the full fare. Checked against TfL's own fares guidance, October 2026.
Why "always peak" matters for Heathrow journeys
TfL's own tube-and-rail fares page states it plainly: "All Tube and Elizabeth line journeys to and from Heathrow Airport are charged peak fares if they start, end or go through Zone 1." That's different from the rest of the network, where off-peak Monday-to-Friday fares apply outside the 06:30-09:30 and 16:00-19:00 windows. For Heathrow, there's no off-peak PAYG fare at all when your journey touches Zone 1, which covers the great majority of Heathrow-to-central-London trips.
Most of the Railcards that can be loaded onto an Oyster card (16-25, 26-30, Senior, HM Forces and Veterans Railcards) only give their one-third discount on off-peak PAYG fares. Since there's no off-peak fare to discount on a Heathrow Zone 1 journey, loading one of these Railcards onto your Oyster card and touching in and out with PAYG gives you no saving on this specific route, even though the same Railcard would save you money on plenty of other TfL journeys.
The Disabled Persons Railcard is the exception
The Disabled Persons Railcard works differently: it gives a third off both peak and off-peak PAYG fares, and lets you buy discounted Anytime and Off-Peak Day Travelcards too, for both the cardholder and one companion. Because the discount applies at peak rates as well, it does genuinely reduce the Oyster PAYG cost of an Elizabeth line or Piccadilly line journey to or from Heathrow, unlike the other Railcards above.
How to actually use a standard Railcard discount on this route
If you hold one of the standard Railcards and still want the saving, buy a paper ticket rather than touching in with Oyster PAYG. An Anytime Day Single between Heathrow and Zone 1, bought as a paper ticket with your Railcard shown, gets the normal third off the full peak fare, the same discount the Railcard would give on any other Anytime fare. The saving doesn't apply if you tap in and out with a registered Railcard discount on Oyster PAYG, because PAYG discounts on this route only ever apply off-peak, and off-peak doesn't exist for Heathrow Zone 1 journeys.
| Railcard type | Discount on Oyster PAYG to/from Heathrow | Discount via paper ticket |
|---|---|---|
| 16-25, 26-30, Senior, HM Forces, Veterans | None (route is always peak-priced) | Yes, one-third off an Anytime fare |
| Disabled Persons Railcard | Yes, one-third off, peak or off-peak | Yes, also one-third off |
| Network Railcard | Not valid for this journey | Not valid for this journey |
Network Railcards don't work on this route at all
The Network Railcard is a different, separate product valid for travel in and around the London and South East area, but it explicitly excludes journeys on the inner part of the network that includes the Heathrow branch, so it isn't valid for a Heathrow rail journey regardless of how you pay.
Does this affect the Piccadilly line too?
The same "always peak" rule applies to the Piccadilly line (the Underground route to Heathrow) wherever the journey starts, ends or passes through Zone 1, so the same logic above applies: standard Railcards only help via a paper ticket, the Disabled Persons Railcard helps on PAYG too, and the Network Railcard doesn't apply. FAQs
Does my 16-25 Railcard save money on the Elizabeth line to Heathrow?
Not if you tap in and out with Oyster pay-as-you-go, because Heathrow journeys through Zone 1 are always charged at the peak rate, and the 16-25 Railcard's Oyster discount only applies off-peak. Buying a paper Anytime Day Single with your Railcard shown does get the normal one-third discount.
Which Railcard actually saves money on Oyster PAYG to Heathrow?
The Disabled Persons Railcard, because it discounts both peak and off-peak PAYG fares by a third, for the cardholder and one companion. Other common Railcards (16-25, 26-30, Senior, HM Forces, Veterans) only discount off-peak PAYG, and Heathrow journeys never qualify as off-peak.
Is there ever an off-peak fare to Heathrow on the Tube or Elizabeth line?
No, not for a journey that starts, ends or passes through Zone 1, which covers nearly all Heathrow-to-central-London journeys. TfL charges these at the peak rate at all times of day.
Does a Network Railcard work for Heathrow journeys?
No. The Network Railcard isn't valid on the section of the network that includes the Heathrow branch, so it can't be used for this journey by any payment method.
How do I actually get a Railcard discount on this journey, then?
Buy a paper ticket, such as an Anytime Day Single, at a ticket machine or office and show your Railcard, rather than relying on a Railcard discount loaded onto an Oyster card for PAYG.
Does the same rule apply to the Piccadilly line?
Yes. The Piccadilly line is charged at the peak rate at all times for journeys to or from Heathrow through Zone 1, so the same Railcard rules described above apply equally to it.
