A taxi from Heathrow to Guildford covers about 25 miles and typically takes 40 to 55 minutes, with pre-booked fares usually landing somewhere around £60 to £85. Unlike most Surrey and Berkshire towns near Heathrow, Guildford also has a genuine direct coach link: the RailAir RA2 service runs straight from the terminals to Guildford railway station, and FlixBus runs a competing direct service from £16.95 one way, with a minimum journey time of about 1 hour 6 minutes. Checked 2026.

Is there a direct bus from Heathrow to Guildford?

Yes, and Guildford is unusual among Heathrow's regional links in having two separate direct coach options rather than one.

The first is RailAir route RA2, which despite the name is a coach rather than a train. It runs from Heathrow's Terminal 5, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 stops via Woking to Guildford, calling at The Chase (for the University of Surrey) before terminating at Guildford railway station. According to South Western Railway's own service summary, RA2 departs roughly every 30 minutes on weekdays. Total journey time is generally in the range of 45 minutes to just over an hour depending on the terminal you start from and traffic on the A3, based on published timetables and independent traveller reports of the route. RailAir tickets are cheaper booked online in advance than paid for on board from the driver, and the coach carries a generous luggage allowance (two bags per person, up to 30kg each) with extra bags chargeable at £5 each.

The second option is FlixBus, which also runs a small number of direct daily services between Heathrow and Guildford, separate from the RailAir network. FlixBus currently advertises fares from £16.95 one way, a minimum trip duration of about 1 hour 6 minutes, and up to 20 trips a day, picking up from Heathrow's Central Bus Station (T2/T3) or Terminal 5.

Both services are genuinely direct, so for most solo or paired travellers without heavy luggage, one of these coaches is the simplest and cheapest way to cover the 25 miles between the airport and the town centre.

University of Surrey and business travellers

Guildford's direct coach link is also useful beyond leisure travel. The RA2 route calls at The Chase, a stop specifically for the University of Surrey campus, and passes close to the Paragon roundabout near McLaren's Woking headquarters and technology centre, making it a practical option for academic visitors, conference delegates and business travellers heading to either site without needing a car.

Taxi: cost and journey time

Heathrow to Guildford runs mostly via the M25 and A3, covering around 25 miles. Uber's own fare estimator for the route lists a typical ride at around £64 for a 43-minute journey in normal traffic, and pre-booked private-hire operators tend to sit in a similar band, roughly £60 to £85 for a standard saloon depending on the operator, time of day and vehicle size. This is an indicative range rather than a single sourced fixed figure, so confirm the exact price with your chosen operator when booking. It's in a similar bracket to nearby Heathrow to Reading, a journey of comparable distance, and well under the fare for the longer run to Heathrow to Oxford. See the full routes and fares table for comparable journeys.

A taxi is the door-to-door choice, and it makes the most sense with heavy luggage, a party of three or more where the coach fare per head adds up, or an arrival time outside the coach's operating hours. Compare fixed-price options on the taxis page.

Why the train needs a change

There's no single direct train between Heathrow and Guildford. Heathrow's own stations (Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express) run into central London, not south into Surrey, so reaching Guildford by rail means linking two different parts of the network. South Western Railway's own guidance for getting to Heathrow describes the connection the other way round: a bus from Feltham station links to trains toward Clapham Junction and the south, which is the same corridor a Guildford-bound rail journey would use in reverse, changing onto a South Western Railway service toward Woking and Guildford. Once on that line, Guildford is well served: it's about 35 minutes from London Waterloo by direct train.

In practice, this route involves at least one change and generally takes longer overall than the direct coach once you add up the connecting legs and any waiting time between them, so it's rarely the fastest or cheapest way to make this specific trip. It's really only worth considering if you're already planning to route through central London or a South Western Railway station for another reason. For most travellers going specifically to Guildford, the direct coach is the more practical choice.

Which to choose

For most solo or two-person trips without heavy luggage, one of the two direct coaches (RailAir RA2 or FlixBus) is the sensible default: FlixBus tends to be the cheaper headline fare, while RailAir's more frequent departures and stop at the University of Surrey make it the more convenient choice for that specific catchment. A pre-booked taxi earns its higher cost for a family or group, very early or late arrivals when coach frequency thins out, or when your final destination in or around Guildford isn't a short hop from the railway station. Routing via a change at Clapham Junction or Woking is really only worth it if you're already travelling that way for another reason.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct bus from Heathrow to Guildford?

Yes, two separate direct services run this route: RailAir RA2, which despite its name is a coach calling at The Chase (University of Surrey) before terminating at Guildford railway station, and FlixBus, which runs a smaller number of daily direct departures from £16.95 one way.

Do I need to change trains to get from Heathrow to Guildford?

Yes. There's no single direct train. Heathrow's own rail lines run into central London, so reaching Guildford by rail means linking onto the South Western Railway network toward Woking and Guildford, generally with at least one change, which usually makes it slower than the direct coach for this specific journey.

Is the taxi fare from Heathrow to Guildford fixed or metered?

Most pre-booked private-hire operators quote a fixed price agreed before you travel. A metered black cab from the rank is also possible but tends to cost more for a journey of this length.

Does the RailAir coach serve the University of Surrey?

Yes. The RA2 route has a dedicated stop, The Chase, for the University of Surrey campus, before continuing to the terminating stop at Guildford railway station.

How much luggage can I take on the coach to Guildford?

RailAir's standard allowance is two pieces of luggage per person (up to 30kg each) plus hand luggage, included free, with additional bags chargeable at £5 each. FlixBus also allows luggage but check the current allowance when booking, since policies vary by operator.

Is it cheaper to book the coach in advance?

Yes. RailAir explicitly prices online advance bookings lower than paying the driver on board, and FlixBus fares also tend to rise closer to departure, so booking ahead online is the cheaper approach with either operator.
