Which wins depends on how far west you go and how many of you there are.

The coach: cheapest and direct to the big two
National Express runs direct from Heathrow Central Bus Station to Bristol from about £12.90 (around 2 hours, up to 17 a day) and to Bath on the 403 from about £14.50 (around 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes, up to 7 a day). For Bristol and Bath the coach is the simplest and cheapest option, with no need to touch central London. For destinations further south west such as Taunton, Exeter and Cornwall, expect a change and a longer trip, so compare carefully before you book.
Rail: fast trains, but only after you reach Paddington
There is no direct train from Heathrow to the West Country. First you get to London Paddington, either on the Elizabeth line (a flat £15.50, about 35 minutes) or the faster Heathrow Express (£26, 15 minutes). From Paddington, Great Western Railway runs frequent fast trains: Bath Spa in about 1 hour 15 minutes, Bristol Temple Meads in about 1 hour 20 minutes on the fastest service, and on down the main line to Taunton, Exeter and Cornwall. Rail is quick on the train, but you pay twice (the Heathrow leg plus the main-line fare) and carry your bags across London, so it is rarely the cheapest.
Private transfer: door to door for groups and awkward hours
A pre-booked transfer fixes the price before you travel and takes you from the terminal to your door, with the driver tracking your flight so a delay does not cost you. It is the least stressful choice with children, heavy luggage, a late-night landing or a group, when several rail or coach fares add up. The honest verdict
For one or two people heading to Bristol or Bath, the direct coach is the best value and avoids central London entirely. If speed matters more than money and you do not mind the Paddington change, rail is quickest on the main leg. For a group, lots of luggage, small children or a late arrival, a fixed-price door-to-door transfer is the calmest option and often costs about the same per head.
