The quickest practical way from Heathrow to Wimbledon is a pre-booked taxi or private hire car, which covers the roughly 12 to 13 miles in 30 to 65 minutes depending on traffic and costs from around £50 fixed fare. By train, allow about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes for the one-change journey, with off-peak fares starting from around £16. There is no direct bus route between the two, so most travellers without luggage constraints choose train or taxi. Checked 2026.

Train: no direct service, but a straightforward change

There is no single train that runs straight from Heathrow to Wimbledon. National Rail and Trainline both list the route as needing one change, with Heathrow Express, the Elizabeth line, South Western Railway, Southern and Thameslink all appearing as operators on different combinations. In practice this means either riding into central London on the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express and changing onto a South Western Railway service heading south west again, or changing at an interchange point such as Clapham Junction onto a train that continues to Wimbledon.

Journey time is typically from about 1 hour 20 minutes on the fastest combinations up to around 1 hour 40 minutes on average, according to Trainline's route data. Fares start from roughly £16 to £17 one-way for an Advance or off-peak ticket booked ahead, rising for Anytime tickets bought on the day. A Railcard, where you hold one, takes around a third off eligible fares. Because this is a two-leg journey with a change of operator, it is worth checking your specific times on the National Rail journey planner or Trainline before you travel, since the exact route and number of trains per day varies through the day.

Taxi and private hire: the direct door-to-door option

A taxi or private hire car is the only way to go door to door from any Heathrow terminal to a Wimbledon address without a change. Licensed airport transfer operators quote fixed fares for this run of roughly £50 to £65 for a standard saloon, with journey time of 30 to 65 minutes depending on the time of day and traffic on the M4, A316 or South Circular approach. Two independent operator quotes checked for this guide both fall in that band: a fixed £50 fare for a 12-mile transfer, and around £54 for a similar minicab booking, both quoting typical journey times in the 30 to 50 minute range outside peak traffic.

A metered black cab (Hackney carriage) picked up from the airport rank will generally cost more than a pre-booked fixed-fare minicab for the same distance, since black cab tariffs are calculated on time and distance rather than agreed in advance. If predictable pricing matters, booking a private hire transfer ahead is the more reliable option; if you want a black cab, ask the driver to confirm or agree a fare before you set off, which is standard practice for trips outside the meter's usual central London range. Our taxis page covers where the ranks are at each terminal and how the ride-hailing apps operate on-site, and our routes page lists Heathrow transfer times to other London districts for comparison.

Bus: not a practical direct option

There is no current direct bus route linking Heathrow Airport and Wimbledon. A single-bus service historically ran between the two (the old route 285 once extended from Heathrow through Feltham, Hanworth, Teddington and Kingston to Wimbledon), but today's 285 covers only the Heathrow to Hatton Cross and Feltham corridor and does not reach Wimbledon. Getting there by bus alone today would mean stitching together multiple local services and a long wait between connections, generally taking well over an hour with no cost advantage over the train. Unless you specifically want to sightsee through Feltham, Hanworth and Teddington on the way, the train or a taxi is the more sensible choice for this journey.

Travelling during the Championships

Wimbledon is best known outside SW19 for hosting the All England Lawn Tennis Championships each year in late June and early July, and this is when transport links between Heathrow and the area see the heaviest use. During the Championships fortnight, expect higher demand for taxis around the airport, busier trains on the connecting services into and out of central London, and heavier road traffic on the approach roads into Wimbledon on match days, particularly around midday and early evening as spectators arrive and leave. If you are travelling to or from Heathrow on a day when play is on, building in extra time and, where possible, avoiding the middle of the day on the busiest match dates will make for a smoother trip. Outside the tournament, journey times and prices settle back to the ranges described above, and this guide applies to travel to Wimbledon at any time of year, not just during the Championships.

FAQs

Some common questions travellers ask about getting from Heathrow to Wimbledon.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct train from Heathrow to Wimbledon?

No. Every route requires one change, whether that is riding into central London on the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express and changing onto a South Western Railway service, or changing at an interchange such as Clapham Junction. Total journey time typically runs from about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes.

How much does a taxi from Heathrow to Wimbledon cost?

Pre-booked fixed fares from licensed airport transfer operators typically run from around £50 to £65 for a standard saloon car, covering the roughly 12 to 13 mile journey in 30 to 65 minutes depending on traffic. A metered black cab from the rank will generally cost more than a pre-booked fare for the same trip.

Is there a bus from Heathrow to Wimbledon?

Not directly. There is no current single bus route linking the two. An older route (285) once ran the full distance via Feltham, Hanworth, Teddington and Kingston, but today's 285 only covers the Heathrow to Feltham and Hatton Cross corridor. Getting there by bus alone today involves several connections and generally takes well over an hour.

What is the cheapest way from Heathrow to Wimbledon?

The train is normally the cheapest option, with Advance or off-peak single fares starting from around £16 to £17, cheaper still with an eligible Railcard. A shared or pre-booked taxi can work out competitively for two or more people travelling together with luggage.

Is Heathrow to Wimbledon busier during the Championships?

Yes. During the Wimbledon Championships in late June and early July, expect higher demand for taxis at the airport, busier connecting trains, and heavier road traffic on the approaches into Wimbledon around the start and end of each day's play. Outside the tournament, journey times and prices settle back to the usual ranges.

Which Heathrow terminal should I plan from?

Terminals 2 and 3 share a single rail station, while Terminal 5 has its own. Journey details and the fastest available route can differ slightly between them, so check times for your specific terminal on National Rail or Trainline before you travel.
