Landside versus airside, and why it matters
At Heathrow, "landside" means the public part of the terminal before you pass through security: the check-in hall, the arrivals hall and the transport links. "Airside" is everything past the security search, where only travelling passengers with a boarding pass can go.
The airport concentrates its food, drink and shopping airside. That is where you find the large departure lounges with rows of restaurants, coffee chains, bars and World Duty Free. The landside areas have far less, usually a small number of coffee shops, grab-and-go counters and one or two sit-down options per terminal, plus the outlets in the arrivals hall for people meeting flights.
The practical takeaway is simple. If you are flying, the biggest and best choice is on the far side of security, so it usually pays to clear security first and eat there, with your gate information already on the screens. Landside dining mainly suits people who are not flying, or travellers with a long wait before check-in opens.
Eating before security if you are flying
There are good reasons to grab something landside. You might be very early, before your airline's check-in desks open, or you might want to sit with someone seeing you off who cannot come through security. In that case, look for the coffee and food outlets in the departures check-in area of your terminal.
Availability changes as outlets come and go, and early-morning opening hours vary, so confirm what is open on the day using the official terminal map at maps.heathrow.com, which lists shops and eateries by terminal and shows whether each is before or after security. Some landside outlets open very early to catch the morning long-haul and short-haul banks, while others do not open until mid-morning.
If you only want a quick coffee, landside is fine. If you want a proper meal, a wider choice and a comfortable seat near your gate, clear security first. Since January 2026 all four terminals use CT scanners and over 97 per cent of passengers cleared security in under five minutes across 2025, so getting airside is usually quick outside the morning peak.
Eating after security, airside
Once you are through, every terminal has an extensive airside offer. You will find full-service restaurants, pubs and bars, coffee chains, fast food and grab-and-go counters spread through the departure lounge, alongside the shops. This is where most travellers eat, because you can watch the departure boards and stay close to your gate.
Two things to keep in mind. First, at some terminals the walk from the main lounge to your gate can be long, especially for far pier and satellite gates, so leave time to get there after you have eaten. Second, prices airside are airport prices, so if budget matters you may prefer to eat before you travel or bring your own food. You can take your own food through security, and thanks to the 2026 liquid rules you can now carry drinks and liquid foods up to 2 litres in your cabin bag.
Meeting someone who is not flying
If a friend or family member is seeing you off or meeting you, remember they cannot pass security without a boarding pass. Arrange to eat together in the landside cafes of the departures hall before you check in, or in the arrivals area if they are meeting your flight. The arrivals halls have their own coffee and food outlets for exactly this.
