Heathrow is a Skytrax 4-Star certified airport, ranked 16th in the world at the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards and 1st among 23 European and North American hubs in AirAdvisor's 2026 ranking. It also won Skytrax's World's Best Airport Shopping award for 2026. Against that, ordinary consumer review sites rate it poorly, with Trustpilot users giving it "Bad" at 1.5 out of 5. The gap comes down to what is being measured: expert and passenger-voted rankings reward Heathrow's scale and shopping, while everyday complaint-driven reviews focus on queues and cost. Overall rating
Heathrow holds a Skytrax 4-Star Airport certification, Skytrax's assessment covering facilities, comfort, cleanliness, shopping, food and beverage, staff service and security. At the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards, voted on by passengers, Heathrow climbed six places to 16th in the world and won the standalone award for World's Best Airport Shopping, beating Singapore Changi and Hamad International in that category.
Separately, AirAdvisor's 2026 airport ranking, published August 2026, scored 23 major European and North American airports on punctuality, passenger satisfaction, transfer costs, shopping and Skytrax ratings, using full-year 2025 Eurocontrol data and over 1.1 million Google reviews. Heathrow ranked first overall with a score of 16.94.
AirHelp's 2026 Score, which weights punctuality most heavily, placed Heathrow 93rd out of 279 airports worldwide, but flagged it as one of the biggest climbers in the report, rising 85 places compared with the previous year.
Everyday consumer reviews tell a different story. On Trustpilot, Heathrow Airport is rated "Bad" at 1.5 out of 5 from more than 1,200 reviews, with recurring complaints about unhelpful staff, dirty toilets, slow baggage reclaim and long, unclear security queues. This pattern is typical of large hub airports: people who had a routine, on-time journey rarely leave a review, while people who hit a delay, a queue or a lost bag are far more likely to, which drags consumer review averages down relative to passenger-voted awards like Skytrax's.
What the category scores show
In Which?'s 2026 UK airport survey, based on 5,789 respondents' experiences across 7,975 airport visits, Heathrow's four terminals scored separately: Terminal 5 came out best at 59%, Terminal 2 scored 57%, Terminal 4 scored 55% and Terminal 3 scored 54%. Across the terminals, the categories Which? marked down most consistently were security queues, seating and the price of shops and restaurants. That range broadly matches Skytrax's own note that "T2 and T5 provide the best facility standards" among Heathrow's terminals, while cross-terminal transfers and the size of the site are flagged as inconvenient compared with more compact hub airports.
What travellers praise
- Shopping and retail. Heathrow's retail offer, spanning around 57,000 square metres and more than 300 shops and restaurants, won Skytrax's World's Best Airport Shopping award for 2026, ahead of Singapore Changi and Hamad International.
- Terminal 5 and Terminal 2. Both score highest of Heathrow's four terminals in Which?'s survey and get the most positive mentions in Skytrax's own assessment for facility standards.
- Range of destinations and airlines. As one of the world's busiest hub airports, Heathrow offers connections most UK airports cannot match, a point reviewers frequently note even when criticising queues or cost.
- Improvement over time. Both the Skytrax World Airport Awards and AirHelp's Score noted Heathrow as one of the largest year-on-year improvers among major hubs in 2026.
Common complaints
- Security and passport control queues. The most consistent complaint across Trustpilot, Which? and Skytrax reviews, particularly at Terminals 3 and 4; see our guide to Heathrow passport control and arrivals waits.
- Size and inter-terminal transfers. Skytrax's own write-up flags that moving between terminals is inconvenient compared with more compact hubs; if you are changing flights, check our guide on connection times at Heathrow.
- Cost of shops, food and transport into London. Which? respondents marked shop and restaurant prices as one of the weakest categories across all four terminals, and Skytrax notes that transport to central London is costly by taxi or express train.
- Facility cleanliness and staffing. Trustpilot reviews cite dirty toilets and slow, understaffed processing at peak times as recurring frustrations, most often at Terminals 3 and 4.
- Baggage reclaim delays. Slow bag reclaim is a repeated theme in one-star Trustpilot reviews, though it is not reflected in the airport's expert-judged awards.
How it compares to other UK airports
On expert and passenger-voted rankings, Heathrow leads UK airports by a wide margin: it is the only UK airport in the Skytrax global top 20 for 2026, and topped AirAdvisor's 2026 index of 23 European and North American airports. On Which?'s consumer satisfaction survey, though, Heathrow's terminals sit in the middle of the UK table, similar to Bristol (57%) and Birmingham, and well behind smaller regional airports such as Exeter (80%) and London City (76%), which benefit from shorter walks and faster processing. That split is consistent with the wider pattern: Heathrow scores strongest where scale, shopping and connectivity are being judged, and weakest where speed and queueing are what matters to the passenger completing the survey. See our guide to Bristol Airport's traveller ratings for a smaller-airport comparison.
