British Airways has announced a major investment programme for Heathrow passengers, including a brand new lounge at Terminal 5 and a redesign of its First, Club Suite, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller cabins, the airline confirmed on Monday 5 October.
The centrepiece is a new lounge serving Terminal 5's C Gates, an area of the terminal that currently has no dedicated lounge. British Airways said the space will offer airfield views and one of the world's longest airport lounge bars, alongside what has been reported elsewhere as a 59-shower facility. The airline is also redeveloping the Terminal 5 Arrivals lounge using the newer lounge concept it recently introduced in Miami, and opening a new First check-in experience at Terminal 3, developed jointly with American Airlines.
British Airways described the lounge programme as one of its largest-ever investments in the airport experience, with every lounge at Heathrow due to be redesigned over the coming years. The airline is running similar lounge redevelopments at Boston and Newark, with Geneva and San Francisco to follow in 2027.
Separately, and on the same day, British Airways unveiled all-new First, Club Suite, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller cabins as part of what it called a multi-billion-pound investment in customer experience. The new First cabin will be introduced alongside an already-announced retrofit of the airline's Airbus A380 fleet, and new amenity kits in royal blue and cream colourways began rolling out on outbound Heathrow flights from Tuesday 6 October.
The announcements were made through British Airways' own press office and reported independently by the aviation and frequent-flyer press, including Head for Points and Business Travel News Europe, both of which confirmed the Terminal 5 C Gates lounge location and the 2028 opening timeframe cited by the airline.
For passengers, the changes will be gradual rather than immediate. British Airways has not given a firm opening date for the Terminal 3 First check-in area, and the Terminal 5 Arrivals lounge redevelopment and new C Gates lounge are multi-year projects, with the C Gates lounge not expected to open until late 2028. The amenity kit refresh is the only change passengers will notice straight away, on outbound long-haul flights from Heathrow.
The investment lands against a backdrop of heavy scrutiny of Heathrow's day-to-day reliability, after repeated air traffic control problems and a British Airways mid-air emergency this month, and comes as the airport pushes ahead with its own long-term expansion plans, including a proposed third runway. British Airways has not linked the lounge and cabin programme to those issues, presenting it instead as part of a wider, previously flagged customer experience transformation that has already included lounge openings in Miami, Glasgow, Seattle and Washington.
What this means for your journey: if you are flying First or Club World from Heathrow in the coming months, expect the existing lounges and cabins to remain unchanged for now, with the new amenity kits the only visible change. Travellers planning ahead for 2027-2028 trips can expect a new T5C lounge and revamped T5 Arrivals lounge, but should not currently plan around them.
