Heathrow taxi or Uber: which is actually cheaper?

Independent London Airport travel guide · not affiliated with Heathrow Airport.

Airport rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Skytrax 4-Star

There's no single answer, because black cabs and pre-booked minicabs publish a fare range while Uber, Bolt and FreeNow use dynamic pricing with no published Heathrow price list. A metered black cab is typically £75 to £130 and a pre-booked minicab £45 to £75; a ride-hailing fare depends on demand at the moment you request it. Checked August 2026.

The prices you can actually compare in advance

A metered black cab and a pre-booked minicab both give you a number you can plan around: roughly £75 to £130 for the black cab, and commonly £45 to £75 for a pre-booked fixed fare to central London. Ride-hailing apps don't publish an equivalent list for Heathrow, because their pricing changes with live demand and supply. That's the core difference: two of these options are knowable before you travel, and one isn't.

Why ride-hailing fares aren't published

Uber, Bolt and FreeNow price each ride individually based on how many drivers are available and how many riders are requesting a car at that moment. That's genuinely useful when demand is low, since a quiet mid-morning ride can be competitive against a pre-booked fare. It's also the reason a fare can rise noticeably at busy times, and Heathrow has plenty of busy times: bank holidays, school-holiday peaks and the early morning and late evening windows when most flights land and depart.

What ride-hailing adds that a rank or pre-booked car doesn't

Beyond price, there are a few operational differences worth weighing. Ride-hailing drivers cannot pick up at the terminal kerb, so you have to walk to your terminal's short-stay Terminal Parking car park first, typically a five to ten minute wait once you request. At T4, that pickup point moved to the T4 Park & Ride after the multi-storey car park closed on 23 June 2026. Driver supply is thin from around midnight to 10am, so a car isn't guaranteed at exactly the moment you need one, and pre-booking a set pickup time in the app is usually more expensive than requesting a car on demand once you land. None of this applies to the black-cab rank or a pre-booked minicab, where a driver is either already waiting or already on the way.

When each is the better choice

For a spontaneous, off-peak trip with light luggage, a ride-hailing app can be genuinely competitive and convenient. For anything tied to a flight time, whether that's an early departure, a late arrival, or simply wanting to know the cost before you travel, the black-cab rank or a pre-booked minicab gives you a number and a guaranteed car in a way an app can't promise. See fixed price versus metered black cab for the fuller breakdown of those two, and the taxis page for exact pickup points.

Frequently asked questions

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi at Heathrow? It depends on demand at the moment you request it, since ride-hailing apps don't publish a fixed Heathrow fare. Black cabs run £75 to £130 metered and pre-booked minicabs commonly £45 to £75, both known before you travel.

Why doesn't Uber publish a price list for Heathrow? Because ride-hailing apps use dynamic pricing that changes with how many drivers are available and how many people are requesting a car at that moment, rather than a fixed published tariff.

Where do I meet an Uber driver at Heathrow? In your terminal's short-stay Terminal Parking car park, not at the kerb. Typical points are T2 Level 4 Row H, T3 Level 3 Row A and T5 Level 1 Row R. T4 pickups moved to the T4 Park & Ride after the car park closed on 23 June 2026.

Is it cheaper to pre-book a ride-hailing pickup time or request on demand? Requesting on demand once you land is usually cheaper than pre-booking a set pickup time through the app.
